This Shaved Steak Sandwich is built on a brioche bun piled high with charred peppers and onions, shaved beef steak and melted provolone cheese. It’s so simple but still hits all the right spots.
You really don’t need much to make these ingredients sing.
Shaved beef steak: Any shaved beef steak will do, but I grab the one from Trader Joe’s
Provolone cheese: Or the cheese of your choosing
Brioche buns: We’ll toast these slightly before melted the cheese. It’s so dang good
Bell pepper and onions: Charred to perfection
Spices: Salt, pepper, and paprika
Worcestershire sauce: For flavor
Here’s what you need to do to get these tasty sandwiches together:
The first thing I do is prep my ingredients by first adding the seasoning to the meat and letting it sit for a bit. (You can do a few hours for the best flavor, but even just adding the seasoning and letting it come to room temperature while you prep the other items will do.)
Then, slice the peppers and onions and set aside. Line a baking sheet with aluminum foil and add the brioche buns (opened). Turn the broiler on high to get that ready.
Add a touch of oil to a cast iron skillet and turn it on to medium-high heat. Once there, add the peppers and onions with a pinch of salt and cook until softened and charred (I just watch this, but it can take anywhere from 5-8 minutes). Once ready, remove to a plate.
Add a touch more oil to the same skillet you cooked the peppers and onions in. Add the beef, breaking it up a bit with your spatula. Add a tablespoon or two of worcestershire and cook until the meat is done. This goes fast since the beef is so thin, so you’ll start toasting the buns when it’s almost ready.
Now add the buns to the oven to let them toast a bit. This will only take a few minutes, so make sure you’re watching! Then remove and add the provolone to the buns. Return to oven to melt the cheese, then remove.
Now pile the steak on to the sandwich, followed by the peppers and onions.
