A good tahini sauce is soooo versatile — you can use it on sandwiches, Chicken Shawarma, salads, falafel, veggie burgers and tons more! What makes this tahini sauce even better is that it’s so easy and can be whipped up in less than 5 minutes.
Tahini is simply ground up sesame seeds — that’s it! You just buy a jar of tahini (like this one) and add to it in order to make a deliciously creamy dressing.
Fun Fact: The first time I ever bought tahini I didn’t know that it was just a base and needed additions to make it actually taste good. I was soooo confused when I went to use it and it was clumped together (as tahini is before you whisk it with water, lemon juice and other goodies). I’ve never made that mistake again!
In order to make this tahini sauce you’ll only need a few ingredients:
Tahini: You can get this in your local supermarket or online.
Water: To help thin it out. I’ve seen fancy recipes where you need ice water to make this work, but honestly there’s no need. Regular water works just fine.
Lemon juice: For acid.
Honey: For a touch of sweetness.
Salt: To make everything pop.
Cumin: For flavor.
Garlic: I grate mine right in to the dressing.
Now that you’ve got everything out, let’s make some tahini sauce!
While everyone’s a little different on the consistency they want, I like my tahini sauce to be like a true dressing — so a little runny but not as runny as water. To achieve this, I tend to equal whatever amount of tahini I’m using. So, for example, if i’m using ½ cup of tahini, I’ll likely use ½ cup of water to get the consistency I want.
When you’re adding the water to the tahini you’ll notice that the tahini resembles cement: Don’t worry! It’ll seize up a bit, but as you keep adding water and whisking it, it’ll become beautiful and creamy.
Now add your lemon juice, salt, cumin and grated garlic. Keep whisking until it all comes together. Add a bit of water if you want it to be thinner. Taste and add more salt if needed!
