Apple crisp is the best fall dessert. Made with sliced apples that are perfectly spiced and a crispy oat topping, this will remind you of your favorite warm and cozy evenings.

My literal favorite recipe every season, Apple Crisp was always a post-apple picking tradition in my family. Every year after we visited Lewin Farms for our annual apples, pumpkins, peppers, and eggplants, my Aunt Shelly would grab a bag of pre-made apple crisp topping from the farm stand and whip this up once we got back.

Now that she’s gone, it’s something I always long for — and it still brings me right back to the smell of her kitchen each and every time I make it (right after apple picking, of course).

    Apple Crisp Ingredients

Here’s what you’ll need to make this recipe:

Apples: I like to do a mix of both tart and sweet apples.

    Oats: For the streusel topping.

    Sugars: Both brown and granulated.

    Flour: For the streusel.

    Cinnamon: For warmth.

Baking powder: To gift lift to the streusel topping.

    Melted butter: For the topping.

Lemon juice: To brighten the apples.

Vanilla extract: To add a little vanilla flavor to apples.

Salt: To bring it all together.

    How to Make Apple Crisp

Here’s how to make this nostalgic fall dessert:

    Step 1: Prep the apples.

Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F.

Peel and slice your apples thin and add them to a large mixing bowl.

    Step 2: Mix the apples.

Now add all of the ingredients for the apples to the sliced apples and mix together until the apples are well-coated. Set aside.

Step 3: Make the streusel topping.

Now combine the oats, flour, brown sugar, baking powder, cinnamon, and salt. Once well mixed, pour in the melted butter and mix with a fork until combined.

Step 4: Add to a baking dish.

Pour the apples into a 9×13 baking dish. Spread them out so they cover the bottom, then add the topping right on top, sprinkling it all over so that it covers the apples well.

Step 5: Bake the apple crisp.

Add to your preheated oven and bake until the top is a little bubbly and crisp — about 40 minutes.

Let rest for 20 minutes before cutting. Serve with whipped cream or vanilla ice cream, if desired.
