Equipment

  • 1 9x13 baking dish

Ingredients

For the apples

  • 2.5 lbs mixed apples peeled and thinly sliced
  • ¼ cup packed brown sugar
  • 2 tbs granulated sugar
  • 1 tbs cinnamon
  • 1 tbs apple butter optional but recommended
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ½ lemon juiced

For the sterusel topping

  • 2 cups old fashioned oats
  • 1 ½ cup packed brown sugar
  • 2 sticks unsalted butter melted
  • 1 cup flour
  • 2 teaspoon cinnamon
  • ½ teaspoon kosher salt
  • ¼ teaspoon baking powder

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F.
  • Add all of the apple ingredients to the apples and mix until well-coated. Set aside.
  • Combine the oats, flour, cinnamon, baking powder, salt, and brown sugar. Once combined, pour in the melted butter and use a fork to mix until combined and no dry flour remains.
  • Pour the apples into the baking dish and spread them out evenly. Top with the oat topping so that it covers the apples and bake in the preheated oven for 40 minutes, or until the top is crispy and it's slightly bubbling.
  • Let rest for 20 minutes before cutting. Serve with whipped cream or vanilla ice cream, if desired.
